BETCoffee Special Guest Of The Niptech Podcast

Please let me introduce Ben and Mike (on the photo) to you, the creators of the Niptech Podcast. Every week, they discuss and comment (in French) what's hot, new, interesting, important, surprising, etc, on the web.

Studios de Fréquence Banane
You may remember that Ben and Mike were kind enough to dedicate a few minutes to BETCoffee in their podcast #11. It was a couple of weeks ago.

The other day, I stumbled on one of Ben's tweets indicating that he was travelling to Switzerland for the holidays. I tweeted back to suggest a meeting, just to shake hands and maybe have a drink, and we ended up recording a whole new podcast together! It happened in one of the studios of the web radio Fréquence Banane.

We talked about BETCoffee and what the website offers but we also touched other topics such as community management, social gaming, virtual money, entrepreneurship, etc.

Check it out at http://www.niptechpodcast.com/?p=164 (it's in French) and let us know what you think!

Many thanks to Ben and Mike for having me, it was a very pleasant exercise and very nice to meet them in person.

Season Greetings

The past three months since the very first online version of BETCoffee were absolutely amazing. We accomplished more than we could have imagined last summer when the project was still in preparation. Most of the progress and success was made possible by you, our early users, with the outstanding feedback you provided and the enthusiasm you demonstrated. We'd like to thank you sincerely for helping us to make the website what it is today.

Hopefully we can count on your continued support in 2010! We have tons of extensions and surprises in preparation for next year and we are looking forward to sharing them with the BETCoffee community.

Meanwhile we'd like to wish you a merry Christmas, happy holidays and a happy new year, to you and your families. May 2010 be rich and prosperous for everyone, let's bet on it!

We'll continue to create and arbitrate official bets during the holidays just in case you wonder. You still have 11 days to compete on the 3 current contests, it's more than enough to win. Don't slow down, keep the pace! Why don't you create a few betting rules by yourself? Remember, they can be private and it's a great way to have fun with your family and friends during the holidays.

Small But Important Upgrade

Hey fellow punters! We just pushed a new upgrade of the public beta including two important changes.

No opposite bets

First, we decided to prevent opposite bets placed by the same players on the same betting rules. Even though the technique was much appreciated by our frequent users to secure their bets, we think that it does not serve the interest of the game.

Therefore, you can only place bets on one outcome per bet, either True or False but not both. When you try to place opposite bets, the corresponding field turns red including an explanation in the information tooltip.

However, you can still place several bets on the same outcome if you want e.g. 3 bets on True.

Automatic log in

No need to log in anymore when you receive one of the following email notifications.
  • Registration confirmation
  • Invitation to be friends
  • Invitation to bet
  • Set the result on a user bet
  • See the result of a user bet
Clicking on the link included in the email you receive will log you in automatically. This should make things quicker and easier.

We hope you'll enjoy it and we welcome your feedback as usual!

500 Bets

Hurray, BETCoffee just reached the milestone of

500 bets !

Well done to all the players!

Today, we are halfway of the 3 contests for the Wii, the watch phone and the MP3 player. The good news is that the 3 current leaders are clearly still within your reach. Don't give up!

To catch up with the best players, choose your strategy, for example:
  • bet on the official bets with the largest numbers of players or the largest amounts
  • ... or create several user bets pertinent to your activities with your friends or colleagues and invite them all to bet against you
  • ... or challenge your Facebook friends and your Twitter followers

  • ... or create your own strategy!

Also, make sure you check out our featured official bets about the winners of the forthcoming Golden Globe Awards or about potential acquisitions in the tech world.

Good luck!

The Niptech Podcast Features BETCoffee

To our French speaking users, fans and followers, you should listen to the Niptech Podcast #11 hosted by Ben and Mike.

Together with Julien, special guest of the podcast, they talk about BETCoffee (starting at 31:05 approximately). Ben shares his first experience as a punter while Mike explains that the website couldn't have been launched more timely with major events coming next year such as the FIFA World Cup. Both rightly see the benefit of using BETCoffee as a service to organise bets in a corporate environment instead of the traditional and very unpractical spreadsheet. Well, you surely won't be surprised if I tell you that we're working on it.

Thank you guys for mentioning BETCoffee in your excellent weekly podcast (I'm a fan anyway) and keep the good work!

And The Winner Is...

Nathanaël Pittet! Nath (right on the photo), one of the most active players on BETCoffee, is our very first BETCoffee Champion as he accumulated the largest amount of Rubies during the first and latest contest.

Nathanael Pittet, first BETCoffee Champion
Yesterday, he was rewarded with a brand new and shiny iPod shuffle in polished stainless steel (limited edition) by Thomas Gendulphe, CEO of Fair Web Entertainment (left on the photo).

"It is a great pleasure to be the first winner, the first Roger Federer of BETCoffee and to receive this beautiful prize", he said.

Nonetheless, as one would expect from a champion, Nathanaël told us that he is already fully concentrated on the next contest.
"Now I'm fighting for the Wii! I always dreamed of it but my wife never offered it to me..."

Let's bet that Nathanaël will do his utmost to win again. Will you let him go (hint) ? There's only one way to stop him: click now on "PLAY FOR FREE" in the right sidebar!

We'll know the name of the next champion on January 4, 2010.

Official Bets With Description, Image And Link

Did you notice that some of the official bets are a lot more attractive now? We decided to enhance the format by adding a picture and by providing a little bit of background as well as a link to the corresponding web page for those of you who need it before placing a bet.

Here's a snapshot of an official bet ending tomorrow about Penélope Cruz and her chances to win the "Best Euopean Actress" award at the European Film Awards.

We did the same on:

Friendly URls And Search Engine Optimization

BETCoffee is accessible to everyone for a few days now and it is time for us to work on our visibility and presence on search engines and directories.

Without going too much into the details of the strategy we're putting in place, let's just mention the friendly URls and page titles. From now on, every time you open the details page of a betting rule, you will notice that its description is included in its unique URl as well as in the title of the page.

Also, all bets but private bets are now captured by search engines.

BETCoffee In Public BETA!

These last weeks, we received some awesome feedback and suggestions from many early users which helped us to design some of the most requested new features and enhancements as well as finetune the existing mechanisms.

After 2 months in private beta, we believe BETCoffee has met a higher bar for quality and reliability and is now ready to open up to the public. As from today, the website is accessible to anyone, as a public beta version.

What do I have to do?

Well, almost nothing. Just use the URi www.betcoffee.com (instead of beta.betcoffee.com) and take 5 seconds to update your bookmark (if any) in your web browser.

Despite the new URi, the switch is seamless: you keep the same user profile, the same credentials and your Rubies account is unchanged of course.

A swarm of improvements

With the public beta we're also pushing a major new release with lots of awesome features and  enhancements as well as some bug fixes. Continue to read to discover what's new on BETCoffee.

Top Social Games for December 1, 2009

Yesterday Inside Social Games posted its lists of the Top 25 Facebook and Top 25 MySpace Games. Unsurprisingly FarmVille on Facebook is by far #1 with nearly 69 million users, growing by more than 6 million monthly active users in November. However, this is only a little more than half of what it earned the previous month.

Facebook itself continues its astounding growth (from 150 to almost 350 million users in a year) and certainly contributes in a great way to the rise of social gaming, unless it is the other way round.

Still on Facebook, Zynga's FishVille is growing rapidly too and ranks #6 with over 21 million users, despite being temporarily taken offline by Facebook beginning of November on claim of advertising violations.

Playdom's Mobsters, the most popular game on MySpace, has a million more users than it had 12 months ago. During the past month, it saw about 92000 new installs bringing it to 14181576 total users.

It's probably the right time to develop a BETCoffee app on Facebook and MySpace, isn't it?

BETCoffee Beta Prize: Last Day Of The Contest

Today is the last day of BETCoffee's first contest. You still have a few hours left (until 11:59pm CET) to place bets and win as many Rubies as you can.

The most successful punter, with the largest amount of available Rubies on his account, wins the iPod shuffle. Read the contest page for more details.

Hint: make some quick winnings today by creating short betting rules and by inviting all your friends to bet against you. However, don't forget that all of them have to set a result before the winnings are calculated!

You can buy Rubies as well via your account page. However, you must have played on at least one betting rule ended before tonight.

Go to beta.betcoffee.com and good luck!

Top 3 Bets On BETCoffee (So Far)

Just a quick note about our most popular betting rules in just a month of private beta. Unsurprisingly, sports bets are the most successful both in terms of participation (number of bets) and value (amount of Rubies).
  1. Qualif. play-off (2nd leg), France vs. Ireland: France wins
  2. L'équipe Suisse des moins de 17 ans gagne la coupe du monde (des -17) contre le Nigeria (the Swiss U17 Team wins the World Cup U17 against Nigeria)

Private Beta 1.2 Is Out

One week and some more great feedback later we are coming up with BETCoffee Beta v1.2. It includes more bug fixes, enhancements and some new and powerful features.

Enhancements

SMS invitations to bet now include BETCoffee's destination phone number. This way, the same SMS can be easily forwarded multiple times.

The "All Bets" page on the website now sorts the active bets by close date/time in descending order (closest first). This way you can see at a glance the betting rules that are about to close.

The category tree view in the left sidebar now only shows the categories that actually comprise at least one active betting rule. This should make it easier to browse the categories.

Privacy Settings

You can now set up your privacy on BETCoffee via the game settings in the left sidebar. Basically, you can choose whether your real name and photo should be visible or not.

Daily Digest

As from today, you will receive a daily email digest including your ranking in the race for the BETCoffee Beta Prize and the gap between you and the top player.

The digest also includes a summary of the bets your friends played on. This way, you can follow up on your friends' activity and easily join in on the most interesting bets.

You can change the frequency of the digest by editing your game settings (left sidebar).

While Facebook accounts could already share a betting rule manually on their Facebook walls, the system now automatically offers to do so every time they create a new betting rule. A good way for them to catch the attention of their Facebook friends, to encourage them to join the game thus increase the chances to win more Rubies!

BETCoffee Beta Prize

The race goes on for the iPod shuffle in stainless steel! Win as many Rubies as you can by betting smart. Everyone still has a chance to win the most classy iPod ever!

Matt Gets A Haircut(ts)

Wondering if tech celebrities are betting too? I've got the perfect example for you. As Google launched its Webmaster Central Channel earlier this year, Matt Cutts, Head of Google's Webspam team, made a bet with his team that they couldn't reach a certain milestone. And they did reach that milestone. Unfortunately for Matt, the bet was that they could do anything they wanted to... Well, I'd rather let you discover it by yourself in the video below.

Hey Matt, next time you bet with your team, just come over and register at www.betcoffee.com. It'll be safer!

BETCoffee Private Beta Running Strong

Hey punters of the world! Just a quick update on the private beta we launched last Friday. We got some very good results on the bunch of invitations we emailed on the same day: 67.9% opened emails with a 45.2% click rate whereas the industry standard is 15.3% and 2.7% respectively. Not too bad for a start.

Just four days later we already have some significant and valuable feedback that we'll use right away to improve BETCoffee. The comments are very positive overall and new bets are coming in every hour!

Thanks for all of you who have joined and provided feedback! For the others, it is still possible to register at www.betcoffee.com to participate in our private Beta.

BETA Postponed To Tuesday

Last Thursday we made our first public presentation of BETCoffee. Despite the relatively small number of attendees, there was a lot of interest and participation. We got some really useful feedback (thank you guys) which gave us the chance to finetune a few features as soon as on the next day.

While we had planned initially to launch the BETA on the day of the presentation, we took the decision to postpone to the coming Tuesday in order to make the best out of the great comments and suggestions we received. Even if it's just a beta, we believe that our first users deserve the best possible quality as from day one and Thomas is coding almost night and day with this only objective in mind. And if you wonder why he's wearing gloves, it's just to bear the heat of his keyboard!

Only one more day of patience and you'll be able to bet online with your friends. In the mean time, prepare your bets!

You can still register for the beta if you haven't yet: betcoffee.com.

French Parliament Discusses New Bill On Online Gambling

The debate will be tense today at the French Parliament with the presentation of a new bill to open up and regulate gambling in France. While the European law was already modified to liberalize the market, member states are under the pressure of the European Commission to reform their gambling markets.

Currently, betting in France is restricted to two main state monopolies i.e. the group Française des Jeux, which runs the state lottery, and Pari Mutuel Urbain which offers gambling on horse racing. All other online gambling is currently banned. If passed, the law would allow a number of national as well as foreign firms to offer sports betting and poker in France, opening a massive potential market. The licenses to operate would be delivered by the ARJEL (Autorité de Régulation des Jeux En Ligne). The number of licenses to be delivered is unclear at this point. On the other hand, those gambling websites who did not request (or are not granted) such a license would become de facto illegal in France.

How is the ARJEL going to monitor the huge market of online gambling? Is it legally possible to stop a punter from accessing an illegal website? Is it even possible technically speaking?

First Batch Of Emails Sent

Yesterday and today as well we sent our first series of emails to our partners, friends and contacts to inform them about the private beta of BETCoffee.

We built some nice templates using MailChimp, an amazing online solution for email marketing. Actually, the templates are entirely based on BETCoffee's branding which gives our emails a really professional and classy touch. It took us quite some time to design and test them but it's worthwile doing it if you really want your communications to make an impression.

We also used (and discovered) Litmus, another online service that lets you test web pages and emails with up to 24 different web browsers and 19 email clients. A great solution to make sure that your pages and emails look nice whatever the software used by your recipients.

Last but not least, the date for the launch of the private beta is now set: it will be the 15 October 2009. Let us know in the comments in case you're interested to participate.

Oh... and there are still some seats available for our first public presentation!

Bwin Leads Top 50 Of Egaming Companies

For the second year in a row, Bwin is ranked number one operator in the eGaming Review Power 50 ranking of the 50 most influential egaming operators, followed by PartyGaming and Betfair.

Bet365 climbs two places to fourth place on the basis of its turnover nearly doubling in 2009 according to the Sunday Times.

Mangas Gaming (operates Betclick and Bet-at-home) has entered the Power 50 for the first time, taking the seventh place.

New to the list are lesser known operators such as Chili Gaming, which plans a major push on the French market when France regulates online gaming next year, Gaming Media Group and Gioco Digitale, an early mover in Italian poker which has managed to survive competition.

Paddy Power and Unibet remained stable in eighth and ninth place respectively.

eGaming Review editor Jake Pollard said:
"These new entrants testify to the constantly changing nature of the egaming industry and show just how diverse the sector is. While some of the new members of the Power 50 have major scale and reach, others are smaller operators that have grown their revenues and market share simply by intelligent strategy execution."

  1. Bwin (1)
  2. PartyGaming (4)
  3. Betfair (5)
  4. Bet365 (6)
  5. William Hill Online (14)
  6. Ladbrokes eGaming (3)
  7. Mangas Gaming (new entrant)
  8. Paddy Power (8)
  9. Unibet (9)
  10. Sportingbet (7)

The Team At Lunch

From left to right: Thomas, Daniel, Olivier

Online Gambling In Europe: Much Confusion, Still

While Europe is liberalizing online gambling, the recent European Court of Justice ruling on Portugal's state-run betting and lottery services provider, Las Santa Casa de Misericordia, suddenly reboosted the ancient model. In fact, the European Court of Justice confirmed on the 8 September the right of the Portuguese Government to forbid private companies of providing online betting services. Fraud prevention and punter protection seemed to be the main justification behind the Court's ruling.

"The prohibition imposed on operators such as Bwin of offering games of chance via the Internet may be regarded as justified by the objective of combating fraud and crime."

Ladbrokes, an online betting and gaming company, have just pulled out of a similar case after the Norwegian Government indicated that they would be using the Portuguese case as precedent. Thus, it could be more difficult for bookmakers to fight state monopolies despite of the new European law, as player protection and fraud prevention can always be used as an excuse for maintaining the state monopoly.

Following the Portuguese case, the European online gambling industry has responded angrily to the European Court of Justice ruling and Bwin has asked for an update of EU regulations. If the laws are not updated, a black market is likely to thrive and Europe may suffer the potential downsides of online gambling. Italy, France and Great Britain have already made concessions to change legal framework allowing for cross border trade of internet betting services as opposed to the position Portugal and Norway has taken.

Online Betting: How To Rule Conflicting Results?

One of the difficulties with betting is to anticipate the numerous possibilities of outcome, even more so with online betting. Even in the case of binary results (when the betting options as well as the outcome are either true or false), there are chances that sometimes one cannot provide a clear result to the event stated in the betting rule. Many scenarios are possible: the event does not take place, or does take place on a different date, or terminates in a way that the result cannot be clearly defined, or terminates without any official result, etc. Moreover the real hurdle is when the result is perceived differently by the stakeholders, or when the official result is wrong and adjusted by a second official a few hours or days after the initial result. How do you cope with claims, disputes and requests for refund or compensation?

Take the PMU (the company marketing and totalizing bets on horse races in France) for example. Recently, at the Hong Kong Jockey-Club race that took place on 15 August in Deauville, the official result (6-17-9-16-1) triggered a number of winnings and the corresponding payments were made before the commissioners realised that there was an error and announced a second updated result (6-17-16-9-1). The latter triggered another series of winnings and payments.

One can easily imagine the consequent headache. It's very difficult to get the money back from the first group of winners who were paid too much by error. Otherwise, in case a stakeholder has been paid less based on the first result than he should have with the second, you probably want to pay him the difference. That's what the French PMU decided to do. At least for those players who kept their tickets! As for the others who got rid of there tickets too soon, they have no evidence that they placed the right bet.

As far as we are informed the PMU also decided to pay winners based on the first (wrong) result, even after the second result was announced! A nice gesture. Is it a happy end though?

"Française des jeux" privatized?

The french ministry of economy thinks again of privatizing “La Française des jeux” (FDJ), according to Liberation.

This is interesting considering that France is currently, under the pressure of EU, opening its gambling market (actually sport betting and poker) over the Internet BUT ensuring the monopolistic position of the existing companies, namely FDJ and PMU.

Indeed, they have already launched their own Internet betting products and they are over-advertising before the market opening... cutting the grass under the feet of their future opponents.

France ensures an exceptional position for the company and sells the goose that lays the golden egg… who will this deal profit to?

FDJ and PMU are big players of the french market with 9.2 billion € and 9.3 billion € gross gaming revenue in 2008; but only 220 M€ (2.3%) and 440 M€ (4.7%) over Internet.

Facebook Connect and Rails: handling logout from Facebook site in Facebooker

Integrating an existing website with Facebook Connect using Facebooker is fairly easy. Several tutorial have been made; the best I found being:However, there is no description on how to handle a frequent use case where the user has been authentified in your application using Facebook Connect and disconnects in the Facebook website.

In this case, you will surely meet the famous:

Facebooker::Session::SessionExpired (Session key invalid or no longer valid)

One solution to handle this is rescue_from introduced in Rails 2.0. This is also the method recommended in the Facebooker documentation.

When the exception occurs, you have to remove the facebook session informations AND facebooker cookies.
Indeed, the set_facebook_session will recreate the facebook_session with these cookies. If you do not remove them, you will loop again and again in your rescue_from handling.

Here is an example of what you can do:

class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base
...
rescue_from Facebooker::Session::SessionExpired do |exception|
clear_facebook_session_information
clear_fb_cookies!
reset_session # i.e. logout the user
flash[:notice] = "You have been disconnected from Facebook."
redirect_to root_url
end
...
end

Dead simple, huh?
